Randy Travis is awake and making progress as he recovers from surgery following last week's stroke.
Doctors said a biopsy showed the swelling in his brain is going down. He's still on a ventilator but his breathing support is gradually being reduced.
Randy's fiancée Mary Davis said he's responding to voices and appears to understand his surroundings and current environment. She added, quote, "He is miles beyond where any of us thought he would be a few days ago."
We're still looking at a long battle, though. Doctors made it clear that it's going to take months to recover from the stroke . . . and there's no certainty that he'll return to full strength.
The plan is for him to stay at the Heart Hospital Baylor in Plano, Texas, for two or three more weeks . . . and then transfer him to another facility where he'll start aggressive physical therapy.
